Otemichi (The Main Approach Stairway)

360° Panorama 1/11 Just past the entrance, the Otemichi opens up ahead — a wide, straight stone stairway climbing toward the hilltop. Many castles bend their approach for defense, so this open layout is distinctive to Azuchi.

360° Panorama 2/11 Plots said to have held the mansions of Hideyoshi and Toshiie face each other across the stairway here. If the tradition is accurate, two of Nobunaga’s senior generals once passed along this very path.

360° Panorama 3/11 Past the Sokenji Temple’s provisional main hall, the stairway keeps climbing. Turn around here, and the straight line of the Otemichi lines up with the foothills below.

360° Panorama 8/11 This marks the end of the Otemichi’s roughly 180-meter straight stretch. Look back down and the full length of the climb from the foothills comes into view.

360° Panorama 9/11 The path forks here, one branch heading to the main compound and old Sokenji Temple ruins. For the Tenshudai, continue toward the Kuroganemon Gate ruins.

From walking it ourselves, the stairway feels steeper than it looks in photos, especially in the stretch right before the Tenshudai. Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes, and borrow a walking stick from the entrance desk if you’d like one — they’re free. The official estimate for a full loop of the castle ruins is about 45 to 90 minutes, though it’s worth building in extra time for breaks.

These photos were taken between 2024 and 2025. Since then, vegetation growth or conservation work at the site may have changed how some areas currently look.
