Part II: Betrayal and Darkness — The Truth Revealed in the Dungeon of Arioka Castle
“To be betrayed by someone you trust”—has any Taiga drama ever depicted that pain so deeply?
Part II of Gunshi Kanbee is a chronicle of a man who loses his light—and finds the strength to rise again.
His youthful warmth, sincerity, and ideals—
All of it shattered, leaving only one question for Kanbee to face: “What does true sincerity mean?”
The Betrayal of Masanori Kodera — When Ideals Are Shattered
Kuroda Kanbee’s lord, Masanori Kodera (played by Tsurutaro Kataoka), was once someone to whom Kanbee offered his utmost loyalty.
But when tensions between Nobunaga and Araki Murashige escalated, Kodera made the fatal mistake—
he sided with Murashige and betrayed Nobunaga.
But it didn’t stop there.
“Kanbee is a traitor. Kill him.”
When Kanbee learned that Kodera had given this order, his heart crumbled like glass.
To be targeted by the very lord he trusted—
And yet, Kanbee didn’t flee.
“Those who remain true to sincerity will prevail in the end.”
That belief alone kept him standing.
Araki Murashige’s Rebellion — The Rift Between Ideals and Reality
Murashige (played by Tetsushi Tanaka) was once a comrade-in-arms, a man who shared Kanbee’s aspirations.
But disillusioned with Nobunaga, Murashige chose the path of rebellion.
Kanbee traveled to Arioka Castle to persuade him.
“It’s not too late. You can still return.”
His voice carried not anger, but sorrow.
But Murashige refused to listen.
Instead, he had Kanbee imprisoned.
In that moment of betrayal, something inside Kanbee quietly broke.
The Dungeon of Arioka Castle — The Agony of Being Kept Alive
A damp, dimly lit earthen cell.
The smell of wet soil, the faint sound of rain, and above all—silence.
Kanbee remained imprisoned there for nearly a full year.
His clothes torn, his hair matted, his cheeks gaunt and pale.
And yet, his spirit never broke.
“If I die here, nothing will remain.”
Junichi Okada’s performance delivers this line with chilling intensity.
Survival itself became a form of torment—
And in that suffering, Kanbee came to understand human nature.
The rage, the despair—all of it shaped the eyes that would one day belong to the most formidable strategist of the Sengoku era.
The Kindness of Dashi — A Small Light in the Darkness
In that pit of darkness, one person quietly cared for Kanbee: Dashi (played by Mirei Kiritani), the wife of Araki Murashige.
Despite her husband’s betrayal, she secretly brought him food and visited him in hiding.
Her kindness was a rare flicker of humanity amid the chaos of war.
Without her, Kanbee might have lost not just his body, but his soul.
To care for another—even an enemy—is what Kanbee believed sincerity truly meant.
Dashi’s compassion rekindled the light in his heart.
Murashige the “Monster” — The Meaning of Survival
Eventually, Araki Murashige escaped the fall of his castle.
His family was executed by Nobunaga, but he alone survived.
Later, he claimed, “To live on is the ultimate rebellion against Nobunaga.”
And he called himself, “A monster born of the Sengoku era.”
His words echoed the tragic life of Yodogimi (Lady Yodo),
who became Hideyoshi’s concubine despite her parents being killed by him.
She too was a woman who had to become a monster—just to survive.
That fierce will to live—
It wasn’t just Murashige’s burden. It was Kanbee’s as well.
He too chose survival in the depths of Arioka’s darkness.
But his survival was different—it was a way of living that would never abandon honor or faith.
Release — From Gentleness to Sharp Resolve
Nearly a year later, Kanbee was finally released.
But the man who emerged was no longer the gentle youth he had once been.
The gaunt face now held a piercing gaze.
The soft smile of old was nowhere to be seen.
A presence that could dominate a battlefield with just a glance.
A cold calm that could read human nature with precision.
All of it—gifts from the darkness of Arioka.
Junichi Okada’s performance feels like a complete transformation.
His voice, his walk, even the way his eyes move—
Everything is sharpened, radiating a quiet strength only those who’ve seen the abyss can possess.
✨ Reflection — The Form of Sincerity Discovered in Darkness
Part II marks a true turning point in Gunshi Kanbee.
It shows both the beauty and brutality of believing in others.
In the space between betrayal and loyalty, how should one live?
Kanbee found the answer in the darkness of Arioka.
Sincerity is not something upheld only by the righteous—
It is the strength to continue believing, even after being betrayed.
And when he finally emerged from that dungeon, he was no longer the same man—
He had been reborn as “Gunshi” Kuroda Kanbee.
